The Burden Of Paying For College

Students have enough to worry about and financing college can place an enormous amount of stress on them. Not only is college expensive, everything else that goes along with an education is as well. Living expenses, travel expenses, books and other necessities can quickly add up. There are some options that students entering college or returning to complete their degree have. Many of the opportunities out there for college students are grants and scholarships, making them “free money”. There are also several loan programs, but the only bad thing about loans is that they must be repaid with interest.

The best way to pay for college is begin saving as an infant, but unfortunately this is not always possible and certainly not feasible! That leaves the rest of us looking for ways to finance our education. Finding money for college is easier than it sounds, there are tons of resources offering money for specific degrees, studies or other affiliations. The only problem is often that students feel that they would never qualify therefore never looking or inquiring. This is a mistake on the part of the student because they are basically throwing money out the door. It is there for the taking and someone has to claim it, so it may well be you!

Start At School

The best way to find out about current lending or monies for college is at the school level. This could be the high school of the student or the college that they are planning to attend. All colleges have financial and admissions counselors that are up to date on all the offers out there. They know far more than anyone because they work with it everyday and the lenders, donors and administration of funds contacts them directly! They have the direct link to the money and the student, so it makes them a wealth of information about college funding. Don’t try to go it alone when looking for ways to finance your education, contact the school and let them help you. It is a free service and they want to find money for you so that you can attend their college, it is job security for them as well.

Special Programs

The type of degree that a student is seeking can also open up financial doors. The government will offer additional funding and great incentives when there is a need for a specific career. Many careers suffer shortages of employees and statisticians predict that there will be shortages of nurses, teachers, police and many more. Again by checking with the local financial aid office of the university the student can learn about programs directed at specific degrees or plans. The stipulation to some of these programs is that the student will agree to enter into that profession for a set amount of time after graduation. If it is something you are going to do anyway, take the money and run with it!

Organizations & Affiliations

There are many organizations and affiliations that offer money to students for college all over the world. In many cases it is as simple as writing an essay or filling out an application. The biggest problem with this type of financing is the fact that many students do not even realize that they are eligible. And, sometimes this type of money can be relatively difficult to find. One thing that a student may look for is corporations, large companies or other organizations in their area. If the company/organization has a website, take a look as there may be information about financial aid programs through their company. The same is true for affiliations of parents and students alike. Many organizations such as membership clubs, hobby clubs and the like will offer money to help defray the costs of college. They may only be small grants, but every little bit helps!

Writing For Money

Many scholarships and grants alike require the submission of an essay. In most cases students have to write an essay about their goals, and why they deserve the money. This worries most students because they need that money, but their writing skills may not be the best in the world. There are numerous resources that can help with the submission of an essay. There are several tips and tricks that can have you writing an award winning essay in minutes. Be sure to proofread the essay and correct any mistakes before sending it in though! It never hurts to have someone else look over it as well!

There are a number of ways to qualify for money to pay for college. Most of it is a hunt for the money and applying yourself just a little bit. The money is not going to jump out and grab you so it will take a little research on your part. Ask the financial or admissions counselors for help, most of them are glad to help!

By Lisa E. Sousa When Do I Start Planning For College? You can start planning for college as early as the first year of high school.

By Lisa E. Sousa

When Do I Start Planning For College?

You can start planning for college as early as the first year of high school. Your high school guidance counselor can help you chart your future by choosing the right college for your personality, interests and abilities. If your counselor is given the sufficient time and opportunities to know you, he or she can provide quite a bit of help to you in different ways.

Guidance counselors can help you by the following ways to get you on the right track:

Determining Your Abilities And Interests: Looking at your IQ scores, and your past and present grades, your guidance counselor can determine which subjects that you naturally excel in. If your grades and scores have not been too good, then, your counselor will work with you until he/she finds the skills that you might have. Once your counselor has helped you to identify your interests and abilities, he or she will help to you plan your academic load to fit your interests. For example, if you are interested in the field of Journalism, your counselor might suggest that you sign up for more advanced writing or English classes or encourage you to join the yearbook committee or write for the school newspaper.

Your Emotional State: Emotions may very well play a role in your future planning. It is generally part of every school curriculum to allow high school counselors to gauge your present emotional and psychological well being to determine your ability to handle certain amounts of pressure as well as certain types of study environments and other factors.

Family Interests vs Your Own Interests: Sadly, it does happen that conflicts may arise when the student may want to study one a certain subject in college while their parents want them so study something different. This can cause confusion in the student in planning their future, especially if the student tries to please everyone. In cases such as this, your counselor will act as a mediator to help you and your parents see eye to eye on your college choices and convince your parents into truly listening to what you have to say about your education.

Picking The Right College For You: Your counselor will help you decide what academic path you need to take in order to attain your degree in your desired field. By working together, he/she will help you choose the college that fits your needs whether it is starting with a community college and later going to a small university, going to a large institution after high school or perhaps other options such as international study.

Choosing The Right Career For You: Many students might not know what they want to do because there are so many options out there. By taking the time to know you, your strengths and interest, your high school counselor will be able to narrow down the career choices for you until you are able to zero on something that engages your interest while making the most out of your skills and abilities.

By making an appointment with your guidance counselor, you will know which direction to take for your future as well as going to the right schools. This will save a lot of time, money and headaches.

About the Author: Planning for college does not end with choosing a school. You also need financial aid to pay for college. We can help. Visit College Is Too Expensive.

By Sports Betting Forum

NCAA College Football is by far what I consider the hardest sports to handicap, wager on and be successful in. It is covered better by local affiliates then national affiliates and thus the best information is often left uncovered. The list of games is long and the new faces and game plans almost impossible to keep up with. In this article I suggest some tips to help you get started in what could prove to be a very difficult season.

Get some help: This is important and I have listed it first for a reason. There are too many teams in division one college football and if you try to handicap too many games you will get dizzy by the amount of information you can find. Bookmark some local affiliates and newspapers. They cover this team every single day and know the team. This should be the first place for you to go for information. Forget ESPN and the other national markets, they get information form these local papers and don’t cover it as well as they could. Cut out the middle man and get right to the information that is important.

Pick your conferences: It is best to try and specialize with a certain conference. Then you will get to know the players, coaches and schemes that are important to handicapping. It is better to specialize on a handful of teams then to guess on over one hundred teams in the NCAA.

Know your player roster: Returning starters are huge in college football and in the early weeks of college football this is all you will hear about. The assumption is returning starters know the system and each other and will play better. This is true but don’t ignore the new players especially with bigger schools. These teams recruit heavy and have great systems something a talented young player can excel in.

Do not chase and stay away from prime time: Big games especially on television are hard to stay away from, but try it. You will often find these games have tougher lines then small market games. Knowing the small market teams may not be exciting, but it will pay off. Try not to chase after a tough day of college football. The main reason is simple, it will be either a tough prime time game with strict lines or a small market game on the west coast about a team you know nothing about. This is a recipe for disaster.

Rivalry’s do mean something: In college athletics rivalry games are what it is all about and records mean nothing. This sets up for let downs in games before the big game and after a big win especially by a team that won as an underdog. I could write for days on this subject but the key thing to remember is that the schedule is important and so are certain games.

In a nutshell I want to stress how tough college football is, but if you go about it the right way you can make some money. Remember your fundamentals of sports wagering and some of the tips I discussed in this article and you will set yourself up to succeed.

By Mark Gesture Hello everyone! College dating seems to be very important in the span of someone's life, whether it be the list of people they hooked up with or the person they married.

By Mark Gesture

Hello everyone!

College dating seems to be very important in the span of someone’s life, whether it be the list of people they hooked up with or the person they married. I know more friends who coupled up and stayed coupled while meeting in college. I just graduated from Bentley College near Boston, MA and I realize the potential for success by finding your true love in College.

My story begins as a sophomore in college. I’m living in a suite room with 7 other guys, I know it sounds like a lot, but actually it was quite spacious and a ton of fun. One weekend I was invited to go out for Thai food downtown Boston, interesting enough the restaurant burned down two weeks later. We piled in my friend’s SUV with a bunch of other friends. This one girl in the back seat I never met before.

Anyway by the nights end I was comfortable to be myself around her, and somehow ended up making her laugh until she cried, while I made a complete fool of myself. So that is where it all began. Almost 3 years later we are still together, and getting together with different groups of friends produced several other ‘couple friends’ we hang out with today.

My point is that now that I am out of college, I see that these large get together of friends only happens in college. Now that I am out of college most of the time I get together with friends never includes different groups. It seems that on Friday night we hang out with one group while on Saturday we go hang out with completely different people, without any opportunity for chance meetings of two people.

So far I know several older people than myself who have yet to find someone after all these years simply because they didn’t take the opportunity in college to find someone special.

I read somewhere that if a girl is not married by age 30 the chance of her getting married decreases tremendously. It almost seems like your success after college depends upon these bonds and relationships you form while inside the confines of your campus… what do you think?

By David Chandler

Due to ever-increasing costs of going to college, it is a good idea to search out available scholarships and apply for them. Scholarships are one of the most enticing forms of financial aid available today. This is because they are available to anyone without any repayment requirements! Many scholarships are overlooked and therefore are a missed opportunity for many students.

If students know about scholarships, they can apply for them, but many students do not know that college scholarships exist. Most students do not understand that there are scholarships obtainable to them, which could pay a major part of their education. In fact, the college scholarship can be used for any educational opportunity. This is includes private or public college, junior college or four-year universities, graduate or certificate programs.

What are college scholarships?

College Scholarships programs come in a variety of forms, which are normally considered free college money. College scholarships, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid. Scholarships can be awarded directly to students in a form of a check or to the school itself. You can receive a scholarship from any of the following types of organizations: charitable foundations, businesses, schools, universities, government agencies, and sometimes-even clubs or groups within the school.

Who can get college scholarships?

Although many scholarships are granted based on grades, this is a misconception. There are scholarships for less than perfect academics as long as you meet the other requirements. They range from athletic scholarships, to community service scholarships.

Many scholarship providers want to reward students for choosing a particular school or state. It is believed by older students that only college-bound high school seniors can apply for scholarship awards, this is not true. Scholarships are accessible for all levels of college study, from freshman undergrads to graduate students. You will need to make sure that you check the requirements for each scholarship for which you apply.

How do students find college scholarships?

It takes some time and energy to find and apply for scholarships, but the hard work will most likely pay off. You can sometimes find them by asking department heads if there are available scholarships, in the department you will major in.

Some student’s use highly regarded and accurate scholarship search services on the Internet to save time in the searching process. This is highly recommended. Online resources are a good idea as long as the website offers updated, current data and a way to match the student with the scholarship.

High school students can ask their guidance counselors about their eligibility for local or state scholarship awards. You should also make sure that you contact the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend, to see if they qualify for awards issued by the school. Finally yet importantly, students should ask their parents and friends to be on the lookout for scholarships, while always checking local bulletin boards and newspapers for additional scholarship listings.

To a high school senior, your last year in high school flies by. Overnight you find yourself faced with many adult decisions that once seemed so far away. With senior proms, skip days, senior trips, senior romances, and graduation; it is hard to find time to think about college. However, this is the most important thing to think about. It is also important to start thinking about this subject early since many scholarships and college applications have deadlines.

One way to help you prepare for college is to organize. Even if your organization only consists of a folder dedicated to college related papers, you will find it makes things a lot easier. This folder should contain your college brochures, applications, scholarship info, SAT or ACT scores, and any other relevant information.

Another way to prepare for college involves keeping track of important dates. If you don’t already have a calendar this is the year to purchase one. You will have many dates to post on your calendar including, deadlines, orientations, and scheduled appointments. These dates, though very important, can be forgotten when faced more pressing issues like first romances.

In addition, to being organized and keeping track of important dates, it is a good idea to visit with your guidance counselor. In fact, it may be good a idea to have your parents sit in on this conversation if they did not attend college. Many parents are as new to the experience as you are and will need to be familiar with some aspects that effect them, especially funding. Your guidance counselor will guide you through the requirements for college including standardized tests, and high school courses that need to be taken.

The next step is to find a college. The best way to do this is by gathering information. Don’t make any decisions until you have all of the information in front of you. This information may come from parents and family, brochures, the internet, college tours, and your guidance counselor. When you have narrowed down a college you can then begin the application process. If you are planning to stay in the dorms, you may also need to fill out an application for that as well.

Another huge step is to find funding for college. Don’t let the price of attending college scare you out of trying. There are many sources to help you fund your education. The most common source is the government. To apply for federal aid you will need to file a Federal Application for Student Financial Aid or a FAFSA. Don’t let the name scare you. This is not as hard as it sounds. However, you will need to have your tax information and the tax information from your parents. A lot of colleges will help you with this process and can even file online for you.

Other sources are scholarships from the college you are planning to attend. The application for a college’s scholarship is usually included in their application packet. In addition, other scholarships related to your major or desired profession may also be available. There may even be scholarships available for your race, age, or other characteristics. The internet is a great source of information to find scholarships that are not run by your college. You may also want to enter contests or pageants to earn money for college.

Your child is ready. He’s kept up his grades and he has decided that he wants the benefit of a college education. It’s decision time. With over 4,000 public 4 year colleges in the country there are a lot of decisions and choices you will need to make.

You can make your decision based on numerous factors, and their importance ranks differently for everyone. What is most important to you? Location? Academics? Sports Programs? Financial considerations?

The first thing that needs to happen is that the student needs to look deeply inside himself/herself and ask “what do I want.” Everyone the student knows will have some sort of opinion or recommendation. These opinions can be helpful, but in the long run the student must make the decision.

Every college is different and offers a different experience.

Some students want a college with an artsy feel. Others want a college with an emphasis placed on sports. Others prefer academics pure and simple and are looking for an academic challenge. Class size and campus size is a factor for some. Do you prefer a large university campus or a small intimate university setting? Some colleges are located in sleepy college towns, and some near bustling cities. Some students prefer to stay near home.

The college location is another huge factor when choosing. Perhaps the student is looking forward to the excitement of a move out of the house and the independence associated with college and is choosing to study out of state. Is the student ready to share a dorm with a total stranger? It is a fact that 90% of college freshmen have never even shared a bedroom – something that can make the concept of “sharing space” and compromise more difficult.

Finances also come into play when decisions are made about college. Most states award their residents with substantial savings if they attend in state colleges. The cost of an out of state college education rapidly escalates when room and board expenses are added. The student and parents must also consider food and transportation costs for out of state education.

Please don’t forget when choosing any college that there are billions of dollars a year available in scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid available to the parents and to the student to help offset college expenses.

If my GPA is low, does that mean that I can’t go to college? No! Although your GPA is one element that the admissions committee will be evaluating, your GPA alone does not get you into college. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get into college with a low GPA.

Here are some ways that you can combat that low GPA:

Score high on the SAT/ACT. Schools are beginning to weigh student’s standardized test scores more heavily than ever before. This is your chance to shine in front of the admissions committee. In order to do this though, you have to put in some effort. If you adequately prepare for your upcoming standardized exams, you can achieve a high score without a problem. Don’t be afraid to sign-up for a SAT or ACT prep course or to go down to your local bookstore to pick-up a book that has some practice questions. Remember, practice makes perfect…well, maybe not perfect, but practice makes a HIGH SCORE!

Be Active on Campus. Are you president of student government or the captain of the cheerleading team? Tell them about it! Leadership skills and extracurricular involvement is a big deal to the college admissions committee. When filling out this part of your application, it’s okay to brag a little bit. Make sure you use words like teamwork, leadership, time management, collaborate, team player, etc. If you’re not that active on campus, no worries…there’s always time to sign-up for volunteer work. Community service demonstrates activism and dedication. You can typically find volunteer opportunities posted on bulletin boards around campus, just keep an eye out for them.

Write a GREAT Entrance Essay. Really take your time on this part of the application. Make sure you fully understand what the admissions committee is asking you before you formulate a draft. Once you have a full understanding of the question, take a few days just to brainstorm about possible things that you may want to write about. Make sure that you grab the reader’s attention and give specific examples. Also, it’s important that you have someone else proofread your essays to ensure that it is free of punctuation, grammar, or spelling errors.

What if I try all this and I still can’t get into a 4-year college or university? Don’t get down on yourself. You still have some other options. There are many top-notch community colleges and online programs that you could attend. Take a couple years to get your grades up to prove to the admissions committee that you are indeed deserving of acceptance into their university. As long as you’re successful in these college-level courses, you’ll have no trouble getting into a 4-year college or university.

This is how to get into college with a low GPA. Are you feeling more encouraged? I sure hope so. Now go get started on putting some of these action items into motion. I know you can do it!

Good Luck future college student!

The parents of most high school seniors insist that they go to college immediately after high school graduation. While college can prepare you for a better future, some students need a break from academics before enrolling in classes. There are several other opportunities for high school graduates that can prepare them for the future without leading them down a path to academic burnout.

Enlist in the Armed Forces

Joining the military is not a route that everyone will want to take. While it can be a good way to learn more about the kind of person you are, develop important skills, and learn the art of self-discipline, going into the military can also be risky and quite dangerous. The pros of this option are that you can make money for college later if you decide to go and you can get great job experience for your resume when you return from your enlistment. You will also leanr martial arts and combat self defense skills taught that will get you in great physical shape. If you decide to go this route and join one of the armed forces, you might want to pick up that Self Defense DVD and start a physical condition program before you get to Basic Training.

See the World

Lots of high school grads have their sights set on seeing the world before they go to college. If you have the money and the ability to travel, exploring what the rest of the world has to offer will get you valuable experience. You can learn new languages and cultures in a way that you just can’t get from books and videos. Traveling can help you prepare for college if you decide you want to enroll later. Experiencing new cultures can help you adjust to dorm life and learn how to cope with unfamiliar settings and surroundings. It’s an expensive alternative, but it one of the most rewarding experience ever. If you have the opportunity to travel – even if it’s only for a few weeks or months – it’s well worth the cost.

Find a Real Job

All your life you’ve probably been listening to people tell you how different life can be “in the real world.” It’s true that keeping a full-time job can be stressful. Lots of times you have to learn to deal with difficult people and create your own solutions to problems. But working full-time can help you transition to life on your own more easily.

You’ll learn the value of hard work, think about ways you can plan for your future, and learn important skills for dealing with the ups and downs of life in general. If you decide to go to work, look for jobs with a company that has a solid future. You need to earn a living wage, but you also need to think about things like health insurance and other benefits.

No matter what you do, take some time to consider all of your options. Being too quick to make a decision is never a good idea.
