“I don’t think I’ll go to college.” How many times have we heard that line in TV shows and movies? Countless. But if parents can afford sending their students to colleges or universities, they do. Statistics show that those who pursue further studies after high school are more successful in the real world.

Most companies hire potential employees who have college diplomas. If they come from Ivy League universities, the better. They know there are some applicants who may not have the same education as those of the Harvard and Princeton graduates yet possess street skills. They are also hired, as long as they have certificates from colleges or an associate degree.

That is the exact reason why people are finding ways to afford colleges. Parents are already saving up while their children are still young. They apply for trust funds and education plans.

Unfortunately, some parents can’t afford colleges. There are those who aspire to step into a college or a university, thus they make it happen themselves. They are working students.

There are also men and women in their mid 30s or 40s attending night classes to get a diploma or certificate. They know that this piece of paper is crucial in the professional world. It will give them an edge when they apply for a certain positon in a big company.

There is a demand for higher education. Whether it be from a private college, public university, vocational institution or community college, as long as the student has the papers showing that he pursued further studies, a business establishment is more interested with his potential.

“Why do I need a college degree?” This is the question most high school students ask. This question is often answered by the fact that men and women who went to college or obtained an education similar to it (associate degrees, night school, online degree, college or state campuses) earn more money than a high school graduate.

Imagine this. One year of college already empowers the individual to cash in more money each year than a person who completed all four years of high school.

So if you are thinking of pursuing a career, you must already save up for the future. Colleges take up a whole lot of preparation. If you have parents who can cash you on with this plan then you are lucky.

If not but you are determined, start handing out your resume to part time opportunities now. It’s an investment worth taking for a better future.

To a high school senior, your last year in high school flies by. Overnight you find yourself faced with many adult decisions that once seemed so far away. With senior proms, skip days, senior trips, senior romances, and graduation; it is hard to find time to think about college. However, this is the most important thing to think about. It is also important to start thinking about this subject early since many scholarships and college applications have deadlines.

One way to help you prepare for college is to organize. Even if your organization only consists of a folder dedicated to college related papers, you will find it makes things a lot easier. This folder should contain your college brochures, applications, scholarship info, SAT or ACT scores, and any other relevant information.

Another way to prepare for college involves keeping track of important dates. If you don’t already have a calendar this is the year to purchase one. You will have many dates to post on your calendar including, deadlines, orientations, and scheduled appointments. These dates, though very important, can be forgotten when faced more pressing issues like first romances.

In addition, to being organized and keeping track of important dates, it is a good idea to visit with your guidance counselor. In fact, it may be good a idea to have your parents sit in on this conversation if they did not attend college. Many parents are as new to the experience as you are and will need to be familiar with some aspects that effect them, especially funding. Your guidance counselor will guide you through the requirements for college including standardized tests, and high school courses that need to be taken.

The next step is to find a college. The best way to do this is by gathering information. Don’t make any decisions until you have all of the information in front of you. This information may come from parents and family, brochures, the internet, college tours, and your guidance counselor. When you have narrowed down a college you can then begin the application process. If you are planning to stay in the dorms, you may also need to fill out an application for that as well.

Another huge step is to find funding for college. Don’t let the price of attending college scare you out of trying. There are many sources to help you fund your education. The most common source is the government. To apply for federal aid you will need to file a Federal Application for Student Financial Aid or a FAFSA. Don’t let the name scare you. This is not as hard as it sounds. However, you will need to have your tax information and the tax information from your parents. A lot of colleges will help you with this process and can even file online for you.

Other sources are scholarships from the college you are planning to attend. The application for a college’s scholarship is usually included in their application packet. In addition, other scholarships related to your major or desired profession may also be available. There may even be scholarships available for your race, age, or other characteristics. The internet is a great source of information to find scholarships that are not run by your college. You may also want to enter contests or pageants to earn money for college.

If my GPA is low, does that mean that I can’t go to college? No! Although your GPA is one element that the admissions committee will be evaluating, your GPA alone does not get you into college. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get into college with a low GPA.

Here are some ways that you can combat that low GPA:

Score high on the SAT/ACT. Schools are beginning to weigh student’s standardized test scores more heavily than ever before. This is your chance to shine in front of the admissions committee. In order to do this though, you have to put in some effort. If you adequately prepare for your upcoming standardized exams, you can achieve a high score without a problem. Don’t be afraid to sign-up for a SAT or ACT prep course or to go down to your local bookstore to pick-up a book that has some practice questions. Remember, practice makes perfect…well, maybe not perfect, but practice makes a HIGH SCORE!

Be Active on Campus. Are you president of student government or the captain of the cheerleading team? Tell them about it! Leadership skills and extracurricular involvement is a big deal to the college admissions committee. When filling out this part of your application, it’s okay to brag a little bit. Make sure you use words like teamwork, leadership, time management, collaborate, team player, etc. If you’re not that active on campus, no worries…there’s always time to sign-up for volunteer work. Community service demonstrates activism and dedication. You can typically find volunteer opportunities posted on bulletin boards around campus, just keep an eye out for them.

Write a GREAT Entrance Essay. Really take your time on this part of the application. Make sure you fully understand what the admissions committee is asking you before you formulate a draft. Once you have a full understanding of the question, take a few days just to brainstorm about possible things that you may want to write about. Make sure that you grab the reader’s attention and give specific examples. Also, it’s important that you have someone else proofread your essays to ensure that it is free of punctuation, grammar, or spelling errors.

What if I try all this and I still can’t get into a 4-year college or university? Don’t get down on yourself. You still have some other options. There are many top-notch community colleges and online programs that you could attend. Take a couple years to get your grades up to prove to the admissions committee that you are indeed deserving of acceptance into their university. As long as you’re successful in these college-level courses, you’ll have no trouble getting into a 4-year college or university.

This is how to get into college with a low GPA. Are you feeling more encouraged? I sure hope so. Now go get started on putting some of these action items into motion. I know you can do it!

Good Luck future college student!

The parents of most high school seniors insist that they go to college immediately after high school graduation. While college can prepare you for a better future, some students need a break from academics before enrolling in classes. There are several other opportunities for high school graduates that can prepare them for the future without leading them down a path to academic burnout.

Enlist in the Armed Forces

Joining the military is not a route that everyone will want to take. While it can be a good way to learn more about the kind of person you are, develop important skills, and learn the art of self-discipline, going into the military can also be risky and quite dangerous. The pros of this option are that you can make money for college later if you decide to go and you can get great job experience for your resume when you return from your enlistment. You will also leanr martial arts and combat self defense skills taught that will get you in great physical shape. If you decide to go this route and join one of the armed forces, you might want to pick up that Self Defense DVD and start a physical condition program before you get to Basic Training.

See the World

Lots of high school grads have their sights set on seeing the world before they go to college. If you have the money and the ability to travel, exploring what the rest of the world has to offer will get you valuable experience. You can learn new languages and cultures in a way that you just can’t get from books and videos. Traveling can help you prepare for college if you decide you want to enroll later. Experiencing new cultures can help you adjust to dorm life and learn how to cope with unfamiliar settings and surroundings. It’s an expensive alternative, but it one of the most rewarding experience ever. If you have the opportunity to travel – even if it’s only for a few weeks or months – it’s well worth the cost.

Find a Real Job

All your life you’ve probably been listening to people tell you how different life can be “in the real world.” It’s true that keeping a full-time job can be stressful. Lots of times you have to learn to deal with difficult people and create your own solutions to problems. But working full-time can help you transition to life on your own more easily.

You’ll learn the value of hard work, think about ways you can plan for your future, and learn important skills for dealing with the ups and downs of life in general. If you decide to go to work, look for jobs with a company that has a solid future. You need to earn a living wage, but you also need to think about things like health insurance and other benefits.

No matter what you do, take some time to consider all of your options. Being too quick to make a decision is never a good idea.

The fact that anyone does not want to go to college is absolutely astounding. That they think they will be better off graduating from high school and getting a jog–that that somehow makes them “free” is absolutely ridiculous. Not only is college necessary for a successful future, it is actually fun.

The Alternative

The alternative to college is to graduate from high school, move out on your own, and get a job. If your rational for not going to school is that you are an adult, well then be an adult and don’t live at home with mom and dad. Getting a job without a college degree is incredibly difficult. Whereas perhaps 30 or 40 years ago you could have just a high school diploma and be successful, today a college degree is considered the bare minimum of education. If you are lucky enough to get a job, you will have to work at least 9 to 5 for a low wage that will barely cover all of the bills that come with being an adult: rent, car payments, food, electric, etc… The first and foremost reason to go to college is that the alternative is miserable and a dead end. Education is important and necessary if you want to be successful and able to enjoy your life.

It’s Fun!

While high school may not be for most and some people hate school from Kindergarten on, college is not like that. College is basically a four year vacation and party. Yes there are classes, yes there is school work–all of which is important to get done, no sense in paying all the money for college if you’re going to fail out–but classes and work do not take up most of your time. College is filled with keg parties and football games and living on your own without footing the bill and without mom and dad telling you what time to be home and asking where you are going. College has all of the perks of being an adult and living on your own without out all of the downsides. The majority of people who have graduated from college will say how much they wish they could go back and those who are in college never want to leave. College is four of the most fun years one will have in their lifetime.

You Choose

Up until college all of your educational decisions were chosen for you, what classes you took and what teachers you had. In college you get to study what interests you. You decide what classes you take, which professors you have, and what your major is. You may not have liked school when you were forced to take classes, but when you are studying things that you enjoy and are interested in, you might find that you actually enjoy school. You choose what you want to take and in effect choose your future. College will prepare you for a successful career with options that are limitless and you will have fun doing it.

By Tom Tessin

A college career is very important to have now a day. To have a successful future and a good paying job, college is most likely required to achieve both of those. There are a few different ways of going to college, either online or at campus. The two are very different ways of learning. Find out everything you need to know about attending college campus classes below:

What is the atmosphere like? – When you go to a campus class for your first time, you will notice that is very similar to a high school atmosphere, although there are a few differences. There are a wide variety of age groups in your classes. Also, most colleges have a couple different buildings you’ll need to walk to. Each building usually has some type of theme or specific subject. Example: One building is the math building, another for science and so on.

What are the professors like? – Your college professors are just like any other teacher you may have had in the past. You future college professors will all be different most likely, depending on their personality. Some professors are stricter, some easier going and so on. Although, most college professors expect more out of you than your high school teachers did. When you’re going to college, you are also paying a high tuition so they want you to do your best!

What are the students like? – The students in you class will usually be younger, but there are different age groups in college. They may range from 15-80 it’s always different. Also, the amount of students in your class is always different. They usually range from like 20-50 on average. College is a great place to make friends. Once you know what your major is and take all the classes you want towards it, you will find that a lot of the same people are in your classes. You’ll notice a lot of the same people, which will help you make great study buddies and friends.

What kind of assignments do you get? – All college professors are different, but the majority of them send you home with quite a bit of homework.

By Susie Watts

Applying to college and college admissions just isn’t like it used to be. In fact, there isn’t much resemblance. Students used to receive an application from a school and completed the required information. Although it took a lot of writing, it was a pretty simple process. Essays were written or typed on the application and everything was turned into the school counseling office. There, teacher recommendations were added, along with an official transcript and test scores, all to be sent off to each college. SAT and ACT scores were included on the transcript.

Today, applying to college is quite different with almost everything being done online. While technology has improved some things, sending your application off into cyberspace leaves many students wondering what really happens to it and how do all of the pieces come together at their destination: the colleges. Essays are uploaded onto the online application, recommendations are frequently sent by Naviance, and SAT and ACT test scores are sent directly from the College Board or ACT. The only part that many high schools are still responsible for is mailing the official high school transcript and a profile of the school.

Most students need help with their college search and applying to college. They often feel overwhelmed and do not know where to turn. They can benefit from a knowledgeable parent, high school counselor or educational consultant who has the expertise and time to answer their questions and simplify the college application and college admissions process.

Here are seven areas where college-bound students need assistance:

1. College Search. Make sure students do a thorough college search and advise them on whether to apply early decision, early action, or regular decision. Share your knowledge of schools which you think might be a good fit and with which students may not be familiar. Students should keep an open mind during the college search and not limit their choices.

2. Essays. Brainstorm good essay topics that help students show a side of themselves that has not come through on another part of the application. Everyone has a story to tell and this is what colleges want to hear from them.

3. Organization. Help students keep track of all deadlines for college applications, supplements, and scholarships and provide a timeline to get each of these done. Provide the organization that is essential to the college application process.

4. Applications. Proofread all applications and essays to make sure they are free of spelling and grammar mistakes. Sloppy applications and essays can land students in the reject pile.

5. Financial aid and Scholarships. Advise students on financial aid and applying for scholarships and help them to find ways to cut college costs. Suggest schools to add to their college list that are known be more generous in their financial aid.

6. Test Preparation. Discuss the SAT and ACT, subject tests and test prep, and which dates are best to take these tests. Talk about the differences in the tests and what colleges require. Some educational consultants offer test prep or you can suggest other qualified individuals.

7. Stress and Anxiety. Help relieve the anxiety that is a natural part of the college admission process. It is often a very stressful experience for students. By feeling that they have things under control, most students find the college admissions process an interesting experience. This gives them a sense of confidence and allows them to put forth their best effort.

It is unrealistic to expect high school students to navigate the college search, application and admissions process on their own. Some parents feel they can work objectively and effectively with their own children and that they have the knowledge to do so. Some high school counselors are able to provide the individual attention and time, but most simply have too many students to advise and have limited time for college counseling. Some families turn to educational consultants who specialize in helping students with the college search and application process. Their services are affordable and can be a wise investment for parents.

Students need someone to answer their questions and keep the process moving. They need support and encouragement to discover what they want in a college experience. This will help them become stronger college applicants and enable them to make informed college decisions. As a family, you need to decide what works best for you and your college-bound student. Whoever you choose, the goal should be to make applying to college and college admissions a little less stressful and no more complicated than it already is.
