By Donald Pang

I clearly remember how it was like when I was about to graduate from high school. Graduating seniors were buzzing about what life was like pursuing a further education in a polytechnic or college. There were stories about how life would be more exciting. You get to have more freedom like wearing your own clothes, lessons that actually make sense to your dream job, and you can even choose to study abroad and choose the hours! What was there not to like about it?

Being the information-vulture, I asked around for advice about college. Some were good and gave me accurate insights. Others were subjective and threw me off-course. Nonetheless, I managed to survive, graduate and accumulate a load of roller-coaster but enriching experiences. Here are three common pieces of advice about college or college myths I like to call it, and my analysis:

1) Answers to assignments cannot be found in textbooks

True. This worried me at first, but it soon became as natural as breathing. Assignments tend to give a lot of open-ended questions, especially for design and business courses. Sometimes, even science majors fret over coming up with their own research topics.

This is nothing to be afraid of. As a future working professional, refreshing and problem-solving solutions are hardly ever found in text books. They are invented. Assignments with no correct or wrong answers are best for developing critical thinking. A strong command of thinking skills in the our globalized world is a must. You are no longer competing with your fellow countrymen but the citizens of the world. And open-ended assignments like these prepare you for this basic requirement.

2) Chances of landing a job in your field of study are minimal.

After graduation, I found this piece of advice vague and very subjective. My conclusion was simple: you are the master of your own fate. Your determination to achieve your dream job will get you there. So whether or not you are studying in your field of interest, you can control the outcome!

However, knowing what you want before you enter college gives you a competitive edge. It allows you to make the right choices. Completing a course relevant to your strength gives you higher chances of landing a job in that field.

3) Schools will give you internships with irrelevant job scopes

This is a true horror story. I knew a few people who studied design courses. One of them ended up working as a cleaner in a design company. However, going to reputable schools can help you avoid such problems. Look out too for schools that hire lecturers with strong credentials. Those with industry experience are able to recommend existing contacts working in the industry. And that is one of the many ways on how schools get relevant placements for students.

You can also take matters into your own hands and search for your own internships. Just compile your portfolio if you are design student, smarten up your r?sum? and send them off! Even if companies are not listing job positions, do not hesitate to ask. Most companies hire interns easily.

“I don’t think I’ll go to college.” How many times have we heard that line in TV shows and movies? Countless. But if parents can afford sending their students to colleges or universities, they do. Statistics show that those who pursue further studies after high school are more successful in the real world.

Most companies hire potential employees who have college diplomas. If they come from Ivy League universities, the better. They know there are some applicants who may not have the same education as those of the Harvard and Princeton graduates yet possess street skills. They are also hired, as long as they have certificates from colleges or an associate degree.

That is the exact reason why people are finding ways to afford colleges. Parents are already saving up while their children are still young. They apply for trust funds and education plans.

Unfortunately, some parents can’t afford colleges. There are those who aspire to step into a college or a university, thus they make it happen themselves. They are working students.

There are also men and women in their mid 30s or 40s attending night classes to get a diploma or certificate. They know that this piece of paper is crucial in the professional world. It will give them an edge when they apply for a certain positon in a big company.

There is a demand for higher education. Whether it be from a private college, public university, vocational institution or community college, as long as the student has the papers showing that he pursued further studies, a business establishment is more interested with his potential.

“Why do I need a college degree?” This is the question most high school students ask. This question is often answered by the fact that men and women who went to college or obtained an education similar to it (associate degrees, night school, online degree, college or state campuses) earn more money than a high school graduate.

Imagine this. One year of college already empowers the individual to cash in more money each year than a person who completed all four years of high school.

So if you are thinking of pursuing a career, you must already save up for the future. Colleges take up a whole lot of preparation. If you have parents who can cash you on with this plan then you are lucky.

If not but you are determined, start handing out your resume to part time opportunities now. It’s an investment worth taking for a better future.

The Burden Of Paying For College

Students have enough to worry about and financing college can place an enormous amount of stress on them. Not only is college expensive, everything else that goes along with an education is as well. Living expenses, travel expenses, books and other necessities can quickly add up. There are some options that students entering college or returning to complete their degree have. Many of the opportunities out there for college students are grants and scholarships, making them “free money”. There are also several loan programs, but the only bad thing about loans is that they must be repaid with interest.

The best way to pay for college is begin saving as an infant, but unfortunately this is not always possible and certainly not feasible! That leaves the rest of us looking for ways to finance our education. Finding money for college is easier than it sounds, there are tons of resources offering money for specific degrees, studies or other affiliations. The only problem is often that students feel that they would never qualify therefore never looking or inquiring. This is a mistake on the part of the student because they are basically throwing money out the door. It is there for the taking and someone has to claim it, so it may well be you!

Start At School

The best way to find out about current lending or monies for college is at the school level. This could be the high school of the student or the college that they are planning to attend. All colleges have financial and admissions counselors that are up to date on all the offers out there. They know far more than anyone because they work with it everyday and the lenders, donors and administration of funds contacts them directly! They have the direct link to the money and the student, so it makes them a wealth of information about college funding. Don’t try to go it alone when looking for ways to finance your education, contact the school and let them help you. It is a free service and they want to find money for you so that you can attend their college, it is job security for them as well.

Special Programs

The type of degree that a student is seeking can also open up financial doors. The government will offer additional funding and great incentives when there is a need for a specific career. Many careers suffer shortages of employees and statisticians predict that there will be shortages of nurses, teachers, police and many more. Again by checking with the local financial aid office of the university the student can learn about programs directed at specific degrees or plans. The stipulation to some of these programs is that the student will agree to enter into that profession for a set amount of time after graduation. If it is something you are going to do anyway, take the money and run with it!

Organizations & Affiliations

There are many organizations and affiliations that offer money to students for college all over the world. In many cases it is as simple as writing an essay or filling out an application. The biggest problem with this type of financing is the fact that many students do not even realize that they are eligible. And, sometimes this type of money can be relatively difficult to find. One thing that a student may look for is corporations, large companies or other organizations in their area. If the company/organization has a website, take a look as there may be information about financial aid programs through their company. The same is true for affiliations of parents and students alike. Many organizations such as membership clubs, hobby clubs and the like will offer money to help defray the costs of college. They may only be small grants, but every little bit helps!

Writing For Money

Many scholarships and grants alike require the submission of an essay. In most cases students have to write an essay about their goals, and why they deserve the money. This worries most students because they need that money, but their writing skills may not be the best in the world. There are numerous resources that can help with the submission of an essay. There are several tips and tricks that can have you writing an award winning essay in minutes. Be sure to proofread the essay and correct any mistakes before sending it in though! It never hurts to have someone else look over it as well!

There are a number of ways to qualify for money to pay for college. Most of it is a hunt for the money and applying yourself just a little bit. The money is not going to jump out and grab you so it will take a little research on your part. Ask the financial or admissions counselors for help, most of them are glad to help!

By Lisa E. Sousa When Do I Start Planning For College? You can start planning for college as early as the first year of high school.

By Lisa E. Sousa

When Do I Start Planning For College?

You can start planning for college as early as the first year of high school. Your high school guidance counselor can help you chart your future by choosing the right college for your personality, interests and abilities. If your counselor is given the sufficient time and opportunities to know you, he or she can provide quite a bit of help to you in different ways.

Guidance counselors can help you by the following ways to get you on the right track:

Determining Your Abilities And Interests: Looking at your IQ scores, and your past and present grades, your guidance counselor can determine which subjects that you naturally excel in. If your grades and scores have not been too good, then, your counselor will work with you until he/she finds the skills that you might have. Once your counselor has helped you to identify your interests and abilities, he or she will help to you plan your academic load to fit your interests. For example, if you are interested in the field of Journalism, your counselor might suggest that you sign up for more advanced writing or English classes or encourage you to join the yearbook committee or write for the school newspaper.

Your Emotional State: Emotions may very well play a role in your future planning. It is generally part of every school curriculum to allow high school counselors to gauge your present emotional and psychological well being to determine your ability to handle certain amounts of pressure as well as certain types of study environments and other factors.

Family Interests vs Your Own Interests: Sadly, it does happen that conflicts may arise when the student may want to study one a certain subject in college while their parents want them so study something different. This can cause confusion in the student in planning their future, especially if the student tries to please everyone. In cases such as this, your counselor will act as a mediator to help you and your parents see eye to eye on your college choices and convince your parents into truly listening to what you have to say about your education.

Picking The Right College For You: Your counselor will help you decide what academic path you need to take in order to attain your degree in your desired field. By working together, he/she will help you choose the college that fits your needs whether it is starting with a community college and later going to a small university, going to a large institution after high school or perhaps other options such as international study.

Choosing The Right Career For You: Many students might not know what they want to do because there are so many options out there. By taking the time to know you, your strengths and interest, your high school counselor will be able to narrow down the career choices for you until you are able to zero on something that engages your interest while making the most out of your skills and abilities.

By making an appointment with your guidance counselor, you will know which direction to take for your future as well as going to the right schools. This will save a lot of time, money and headaches.

By Terje Ellingsen If you or a member of your family is planning to go to college, you probably should consider taking a college loan.

By Terje Ellingsen

If you or a member of your family is planning to go to college, you probably should consider taking a college loan. There are several ways to put together financing for college and there are also several financial sources you can combine when you need a college or student loan.

The expenses for studying varies from school to school. Some schools might be so expensive that you might have to take out more than one loan. However, college financing is cheap compared with private loans and as a student, you can also take advantage of school based financial aid, scholarships and grants.

If you haven’t already decided which school or schools you are interested in and are going to apply to, you should make a list of

colleges that interest you (Harward, Standford, Johns Hopkins or others) colleges that you are likely to get into.

How much do you need?

Like I said above, since the cost varies between schools, the college that you choose to go to will what determines how much money You’ll need to apply for. Here is what you should do: Add together;

fees

tuition

other school expenses (for example housing, food, transportation, books, lab fees and other relevant expenses)

deduct money you might have saved for college.

This should give you a good estimate of the student loan you’ll need to apply for. Once again as mentioned, college as well as all federal loans are cheap;

Low interest rates, you can wait to start paying them off until after your graduation.

Some types of student loans

Stafford Loans

These loans are meant for graduates and undergraduates and have a subsidized as well as an unsubsidized variant. The first means that interest doesn’t start to accrue before you begin to pay back your loan. Unsubsidized means that interest takes effect immediately.

Plus Loans – are targeted to parents of undergraduates.

Private college or student loans – Private loans should only be applied for, If you need additional funds.

If you put some time into applying for different scholarships –and there are lots of them – you may be able to finance your college experience without having to take out such big loans, or maybe even no student loans at all.

Here are a few great tips that could and should help you get into college and embark on a journey that will surely change your life. If you are close to the end of your high school career you better get moving in you want to be successful. The early bird gets admission.

Start the application process as early as you can. If a school that you like offers an early admission program then go for it. If not wait until the admission season opens and get to work. Making application to colleges is a very technical and cumbersome process. Check out the websites for schools on your list and find out when they begin accepting applications.

Have a financial plan ready to go. If your need financial aid or a student loan you can start that process long before the school year begins. Know where your money is coming from long before you get your acceptance letter.

Some experts suggest that instead of applying to a long list of schools that you focus on a smaller number that you really have an interest in attending. That list should have at least one pretty sure bet, a longer odds chance, and your dream school.

Perfect your essay writing skills. Every application will require one so why don’t you take the time to write a great one. If this is really not your area of expertise then get help, from a counselor, a friend or a family member.

Prepare for your interview. Remember to relax as much as possible, take your time answering questions, and breathe. A few long breaths just before the interview begins is a great way to help you become wide awake and attentive. Dress appropriately, be polite, and most importantly just be yourself.

Double check and proofread your application as the last thing you do before you seal the envelope, put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mailbox. Poor grammar and errors increase your chances of being placed in the rejected pile, and you don’t want that do you?

Finally, ask all of your friends and family members who have been through the college admissions process for their advice and guidance. Listen well and follow their suggestions. They are pulling for you to succeed and if you follow these tips your mailbox will soon be bringing you offers of acceptance to choose from.
